Beta Upsilon Chapter Today at the Kappa House on Prospect
More than a century after it was founded, Beta Upsilon is still leading at West Virginia University.
Life at the Kappa House on Prospect Today
Today’s Beta Upsilon members carry on the traditions of leadership, scholarship and sisterhood that began at West Virginia University more than 110 years ago. The house at 265 Prospect is where much of that happens: members live there during the school year, the chapter meets and dines there, and recruitment welcomes new members through the same front door their predecessors used.
A house director who is also a Kappa
Day-to-day life in the house is guided by the house director. Rikki Huffman, one of the first alumnae initiated under Kappa Kappa Gamma’s alumna initiation policy, became Beta Upsilon’s first house director who is also a Kappa.
Leading through a pandemic
When COVID-19 changed campus life, the house girls, the house director and the House Board put a plan in place to keep the house safe. In the fall semester the chapter went home for Thanksgiving as the only Greek house at that point with no COVID-19 cases in the house.
How Alumnae Support the Kappa House on Prospect
Collegians live in the house for only a few years, but alumnae keep it standing for the next generation. Gifts to the house fund repairs and upgrades that chapter dues alone cannot cover, so members can focus on their studies and leadership instead of leaky showers and drafty windows.
The mission of the House Board is to give Kappas at WVU a safe and gracious home: a sanctuary for academic work and a place that attracts the next generation of Beta Upsilons. See Challenges and Needs for what is still on the list, or donate today.
