Our House: the Kappa House on Prospect
A stone colonial on Prospect Street in Morgantown, built by Kappas for Kappas and home to the Beta Upsilon Chapter for more than 80 years.
A Stone Landmark: the Kappa House on Prospect
The Kappa House on Prospect sits at 265 Prospect Street in Morgantown, West Virginia, near West Virginia University’s downtown campus. With its sandstone walls, navy shutters, white trim and row of dormers, it is one of the most recognizable chapter houses in Morgantown. The words “Kappa Kappa Gamma” sit above the front door, under a carved pediment that has welcomed generations of sisters home.
Beta Upsilon built the house in 1939, and it turned 80 in 2019. Inside are bedrooms for collegiate members, a chapter dining room, a powder room, a staff kitchen and the gathering spaces where recruitment, chapter meetings and Founders Day celebrations happen each year.
Caring for a house this age is a long-term job. The Beta Upsilon House Board, a volunteer group of alumnae, owns and maintains the property and works with the chapter and house director to keep it safe, comfortable and true to its history.
