Challenges and Needs at the Kappa House on Prospect
A beautiful old house comes with old-house problems. Here is what it takes to keep 265 Prospect safe and strong.
Caring for the Kappa House on Prospect
The Kappa House on Prospect was built in 1939. Stone walls last for generations, but roofs, windows, plumbing, floors and kitchens wear out. Many repairs can only be made in the summer, when the house is empty, so a missed fundraising goal can push a project back a full year.
The capital campaign raised $475,000 and paid for the most urgent projects. The work is not finished, and the House Board still needs steady annual support to stay ahead of the next repair.
Still on the list
- Remaining windows that need to be replaced
- Sidewalks to be redone
- Kitchen renovations, including a commercial refrigerator and stove
- Carpet replacement in the upstairs hallways and bedrooms
- A rebuilt reserve fund for emergencies and planned maintenance
