The Kappa House on Prospect House Board

The Beta Upsilon House Board takes care of the house so the chapter can focus on sisterhood and scholarship.

What the Kappa House on Prospect House Board Does

The Beta Upsilon House Board is a group of volunteer alumnae responsible for the house at 265 Prospect Street. Its mission is to provide a safe and gracious home to Kappa Kappa Gammas at West Virginia University and to maintain a fine standard of housing for members into the future.

  • Stewardship: owning and maintaining the property, its finances and its long-term debt.
  • Planning: keeping a prioritized plan of capital improvements and reviewing it regularly.
  • Operations: working with the house director and chapter on day-to-day house life.
  • Safety: adapting house operations to new needs, as it did during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Setting priorities

Priorities sometimes change based on immediate needs. In 2019, the failing roof and windows moved to the top of the list ahead of the bathroom project. The board’s plan let it make that call quickly and put donor money where it was needed most.

Working with the Kappa House on Prospect House Director

The house director lives in the house and manages daily operations. Rikki Huffman, initiated under Kappa’s alumna initiation policy, became the first Beta Upsilon house director who is also a Kappa. Working with the board and the house girls, she helped the chapter get through the pandemic semester safely.
